About Kas (Antiphellos)

Historical Basis
The fist traces of settlement in Kas
area go back to 8,000s BC. Area was the
host for Lycian Civilization in ancient
times and was an important settlement
throughout the history.
Habesos is the most ancient name of Kas
ever known. Later, it was called as
Phellos (Rocky/Stony Place) and its
harbour area was called Antiphellos.
During the Roman time, its commercial
importance grew and the area became a
rich centre of commerce, an intersection
point where olive, olive oil, vines and
precious wood were sold and where goods
belonging almost every culture were
exchanged.
Evidencing this assumption are the
diversity of goods found in Uluburun
Wreck, which is known today as the most
ancient wreck ever. A real sized copy of
Uluburun Wreck was re-constructed by
Bodrum Submarine Museum’s experts and
reached to Kas using the
Bodrum-Cyprus-Alanya course in the
summer of 2005. The vessel is currently
open to visit at Kas.
